Does Urban Outfitters carry vegan shoes?

Hi all,

Is something going on at Urban Outfitters?

Yesterday, I accidently posted a shoe with leather in it from Urban Outfitter.  For that reason, I started to double check all the shoes that I have posted from Urban.

On some of the shoes, the customer-written “vegan” labels have disappeared and a warning sign appeared that basically says there is lead in the shoe, citing California’s Proposition 65.  Whether or not they are dangerous to wear I’m not sure yet, but they certainly aren’t good for the environment.

Next steps

I don’t want to be hasty, so I will not take them down from my blog yet.   I will do some research on this and get back to you when I am more informed on the subject.

Read more about proposition 65…

Urban’s note regarding California Proposition 65:

“Some of our products such as dinnerware, glassware, items used to serve food, wallets, handbags, purses, clutches, totes, clothing, accessories, or shoes made of vinyl or imitation leather may contain lead. In accordance with Proposition 65, we issue the following warning to our California customers: “The materials used on the exterior of this product contain lead, a chemical known to the State of California to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm.” For more information regarding lead-related FAQs, we recommend you review http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/tfacts13.html.”

Vintage leather shoes?

Hi guys,

What do you think about second-hand leather shoes?  Here is a poll from Vegan Represent.Vegan Represent Poll

My case for no

  • We wouldn’t wear our dead friends.
  • Being cruel isn’t fashionable
  • It prevents us from buying a similar shoe from a vegan company
  • The thrift store finds value in leather shoes

My case for yes

  • Wasteful to throw the shoes away
  • The company that made the leather shoe is not getting the money
  • These shoes were already made and worn, there is nothing I can do about what the animal went through at this point
  • Great prices for really nice shoes- It’s a recession!

Honestly, I’m still divided on the issue.  I’ll admit it feels so much better to wear love on my feet, no matter where it came from!

I would love to have your comments!

My love shoe philosophy

Hi guys,

No shoe today.  I think I’ll leave one post a week for discussion.  I would love to have your comments.

I admit it: I own leather shoes.

I saw Meat.org a few months ago and was shocked vegetarian by it.  However, I realize that the farm animal industry is a necessary evil.

Until alternatives for what what we wear are desired and available, the tons of animals will be tortured and killed.  Money talks- we need to not only speak and eat our convictions, but support compassion based companies with our money.  How else will they exist?

But I’m ready for change.

I believe that if people, both vegan and not vegan start to buy some vegan shoes, then we send a message to the companies that the demand for them exists.

A perfect example is Burger King- do you guys know that it has a vegetarian burger now?  Do you think they would have that if people didn’t go there to buy it? No way!

What is your love shoe philosophy?
